Career Resume Writing

I’m fired up about resume writing today

I’m just going to come out and say it…

Your years of experience isn’t as impressive as you think it is.

At least not the way you probably current pitch it.

Let me show you what I mean.

I saw this video LinkedIn did with Mark Cuban (Shark Tank investor and NBA team owner) about what to do if you NEED a job right now.

His advice was simple and effective:

Step 1: study which industries are doing well

Step 2: apply for job in those industries

There’s a lot more to it when you get into the details with things like your resume, cover letter, competition, etc. but he’s spot on.

One of the first comments under the post said:

20%+ unemployment coming. Good luck trying to replace your income. I’m laid off from my 1099 job where I make decent money(Bachelors, 20+ years professional experience). I applied at Costco 2 weeks ago and haven’t heard a word. Construction jobs require skills and may tank soon

I’d bet any money he thought he was overqualified and his resume probably came off as such instead of him crafting it to highlight the skills needed for that specific job.

What if his 20 years was as a professional sheep herder? Nobody cares.

Think about that next time you’re pitching yourself if the first thing to come out of your mouth is about tenure instead of results. Same goes for trying to get promoted.

And if you want me to show you how to change this mindset and turn your resume into an interview magnet… even in an atrocious economy, you’re going to want to click on this link:
